Keep Your Tokens Safe: Good Practices to Protect Your EXOS

December 6, 2019

The EXOS token is the native digital asset of the OpenExO Ecosystem. Our community members use EXOS on the OpenExO Platform and in the world at large on a peer to peer basis for low friction peer to peer payments between members of the community. Ultimately, EXOS is a cryptocurrency. Safe and secure practices for token holders are crucial in the same way you keep your debit card pin number safe, you should keep your private EXOS wallet information safe and secure at all times.

Let’s consider some baseline practices for any EXOS wallet, there is more than one type, to help you and your peers safe when using and managing EXOS.

Baseline Rules for EXOS Wallet Safe Handling

  • For ANY EXOS wallet
  • Always update your wallets to the latest available version.
  • If your wallet does not sync with the network - that’s the most likely reason.
  • No matter which wallet you are using, make sure to download the wallets ONLY from our official Github repository https://github.com/exoeconomy
  • If you are still running the old CIVX wallet, this and migrating your tokens is especially important.
  • Do not share your balance or EXOS addresses in a public setting (social networks, discussion forums, video feeds, etc.)
  • It can make you traceable and/or compromise your identity or wallet balance(s)
  • When interacting with the tipbot in our Discord channel ( https://link.exos.to/discord) to check your tipbot wallet balance, do so ONLY using a direct message (DM).   More about tipbot…
  • To begin a private, direct conversation with the tipbot, go to the #tipping channel in the ExO Economy Discord. In the top of the right side panel you will see the “tipbot” user, either left-click on it, and type in the message (see the screenshot below), or right click and select “Message”

  • Do not share your wallet passphrase with anyone. Or, if you do, understand that with that phrase, they can spend EXOS on your behalf.
  • Keep in mind that if you lose your (staking wallet) passphrase we will NOT be able to help you and your might lock yourself away from all of your own tokens - do a backup of your passphrase, and keep it safe, offline
  • Always create a new receive address, when accepting tokens from someone new, this practice helps “de-identify” you to anyone who might know a prior receive address. This is is not a requirement, but it is a best practice.
  • Label each transaction in your wallet so it is easier to identify later, if needed
  • For the EXOS “Staking” Wallet (aka EXOS-Qt) only
  • Encrypt your wallet
  • Backup the wallet files regularly
  • This wallet keeps your keys and, effectively, your crypto on your device. This means that if you lose the device, without an off-device backup you will lose the keys and tokens. There are features in the wallet to make it easy and you should also be running regular backups on your device using backup software.
  • For the EXOS “Cloud” Wallet (aka EXOS-Electrum) only
  • Do not share your seeds with anyone - Cloud (electrum) Wallet Only
  • Some of our wallets have a special security feature called seeds. Keep these stored in your strongest method. It’s recommended that you even store it offline and keep it in a safe place.
  • Having access to this phrase will allow you to recover your wallet in case you forget your passphrase and/or your computer gets damaged or stolen. Of course, anyone with the entire seed phrase can do so.
  • Do a regular backup of your encrypted wallet and/or make sure you have the right seed phrase safely stored
  • Store it OFFLINE
  • And, yes, we’ll be repeating this again, and again - it’s really important!
  • If you are staking, a crucial activity in a peer managed and peer owned blockchain network! (this is also called proof of stake mining) unlock your wallet only for staking (in the Qt staking wallet go to Settings > Unlock wallet… and select “For staking only”).
  • You will be able to stake your tokens, while any remainder will require you to enter your password (or passphrase) before each transaction
  • Use the Cloud Wallet ( https://link.exos.to/cloud-wallet) for day to day transactions
  • It is faster to set up and to send/receive EXOS right-away, since you do not need to download and verify the entire blockchain (the latter can take up to 3-4 hours).
  • Again, please make sure you have your 12 word seed backed up in a safe place - offline.
  • For additional security and as a good practice for Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC) using the Multi-Signature feature of the Cloud Wallet (EXOS-Electrum)
  • This requires more than one person to approve spending tokens from the wallet. A predetermined number of people, or wallets (e.g. 2 out of 3, or 3 out of 5) to confirm and sign off any transaction, before it can be executed. This is used extensively in the management of EXOS throughout the network.
  • If kept in a multi-signature wallet, even if someone does get a hold of one (or more) of your seed phrases (12 words used in the Cloud wallet) they will still not be able to do anything with your tokens except see that they exist.

Last but not least: in today’s world, many of your accounts (emails, utilities, social networks, etc) require you to provide your email address to authenticate you, and in some cases those accounts are connected to your mobile phone. This can be a problem. SIM hacks are rampant.

It is recommended to use two factor authentication (2FA) as an extra layer of protection for all your accounts. It is recommended that you contact your mobile service provider and set up any additional layers of security they provide like a rescue phrase, pin number, etc. Use everything they offer to add additional security regarding your cell phone.

Why this is related to your EXOS tokens? Some people may use some cloud services to store their passphrase or seeds (even if it’s NOT recommended!), and to get access to recover the credential to those services, in most cases, your mobile phone is used. Hackers or malicious actors can exploit that. Verify with your mobile service provider if they have a PIN passcode you need to provide before redirecting your number or changing to a new SIM card for your phone. If they provide the service, please make sure you enable it for all of your accounts.
